Sign Languages in the same family are generally similar. This means it takes less effort to learn, and travel, amongst the same sign language family.

There are over 300 Sign Languages around the world. Not all fit in these major families. There are also many tribal languages.

Indonesian Sign Language (Bahasa Isyarat Indonesia, BISINDO)

Local languages have been mixed with American Sign Language (perhaps via Malaysian Sign Language). Dialects include: Jarkata SL, Yogyakarta SL.

Education currently relies on manually-coded Malay known as Sistem Isyarat Bahasa Indonesia (SIBI).
